Aalmarkt Leiden

Monumental department store transformed into 6,000 sq m of A1 retail space with integrated bicycle parking.

This redeveloped monumental department store, located in the Waagblok on the Aalmarkt in the city centre of Leiden, was the first Idea House in the Netherlands. It introduced new retail concepts, A-brand stores, and a distinctive corporate identity.

The floor area of the department store was reduced, making approximately 6,000 m² of A1 retail space available to other retailers. A bicycle parking facility with 1,000 spaces was constructed beneath the department store. The free parking adds value to the city.
